Transformation of Specialist Quarantine Facility

Project Overview

Our team at Smart CI Group recently completed a full transformation project for a major UK visitor attraction, refurbishing a highly specialised back-of-house quarantine area used for aquatic life care and management.

The space required a full strip-out, structural modifications, new fire safety installations, and a complete redesign to support new tank layouts and modern operational demands. This was a multi-month project that brought together expertise from every division within Smart CI Group.

The Challenge

The existing quarantine area had become outdated and no longer supported the upgraded tank systems or flow requirements planned by the client. The room included redundant equipment, an old false floor, and a layout that restricted safe access and efficient workflows.

Our challenge was to create a clean, structurally sound, purpose-designed environment capable of supporting new water tanks, a newly configured office area, and improved safety and maintenance access - all while working discreetly within a live operational setting.

Our Work

To deliver a seamless transformation, our divisions collaborated closely from planning through to installation:

Full Strip-Out

● Removal of all redundant machinery and equipment

● Safe dismantling and disposal of the existing false floor

● Clearance of old office structures and utilities

This created a blank canvas for the new quarantine layout.

Structural & Fabrication Works

● Construction of new bases for the incoming water tanks, engineered for load-bearing strength and durability

● Installation of a new GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) suspended floor, designed to suit the updated configuration and withstand the demanding conditions of a marine environment

New Quarantine Office

We built a new, purpose-designed office area within the space to support day-to-day operations, monitoring, and record keeping.

Fire Protection Upgrades

● Supply and installation of two new fire exit door sets, ensuring compliance with safety standards and improving emergency egress routes.

A True Multi-Division Project

This renovation brought together all major Smart CI Group services, construction, fabrication, electrical, fire protection, and finishing works - demonstrating the strength of our integrated divisions.

Each team played a critical role in ensuring that the new facility was safe, resilient, functional, and ready to support the client’s specialist aquatic requirements for years to come.

The Result

The completed quarantine area is now fully modernised, purpose-built, and aligned with the client’s operational and welfare standards. What began as a dated, inefficient space is now a clean, structured, and high-performance facility, designed to support complex aquatic care routines.
